Williams served as a course superintendent in the Chicago area for thirty-eight years. He was superintendent at Bellaire, Beverly Country Club, and twenty-one years at Bob O'Link Golf Club. He received special recognition from golf clubs across the United States for his development of training programs for student superintendents. An innovator, Williams changed golf course maintenance from the era of the "green thumb" trial and error approach to today's high-tech procedures of golf course grooming with an atmosphere of business and management. Williams also served as president of the Midwest and the International Association of Golf Course Superintendents.
