Dann served 29 years as executive director of the Western Golf Association and its two rather diverse golf operations - the nationwide Evans Scholars program and a championship schedule including the Western Open. Dann, a sportswriter for the Detroit Free Press for 20 years, came to the WGA in 1960 and soon initiated the policy change that returned the Western to the Chicago area on a permanent basis. The Western Open enjoyed tremendous growth under Dann, as did the Evans Scholars, which for the first time could rely on regular income from the championship. Dann served golf in many other ways: He among the first television commentators, a past -president of the American Golf Sponsors, a founding member of the International Association of Golf Administrators, a director of the National Golf Fund, a trustee of the PGA's National Pension Plan, and a life member of the Golf Writers Association of America.
