Most closely associated with Flossmoor, Harry Collis was a player, club professional, architect, superintendent and turf grass innovator across four decades. His Flossmoor Bentgrass strain, developed on the course he tended, was planted on courses in the Midwest served by his Flossmoor Nursery for decades. Architect of nearly two dozen courses nationwide in the 1910s and 1920s, his surviving Chicago-area course designs include Glenwoodie and the redesign of Flossmoor, following a trip to Scotland to study the classic courses. A regular competitor in the Western Open and area tournaments, he marketed a series of hickory-shafted clubs under his name.
