Adapting golf for the physically disabled is what Bernardoni has devoted more than 40 years of his life. His golf methods and personal examples helped thousands of his students develop the courage to overcome their physical limitations. His interest came after a parachute accident during World War II left him with spinal cord damage, partial paralysis of the right leg and rib injuries. In 1978 Gus wrote a book entitled “Golf God's Way,” noting the therapy of golf allowed him to recover from his injuries and turn his misfortune around to help others. Gus's dedication and self-drive have been an inspiration to disabled people throughout the country, reaching thousands of individuals with a variety of handicaps. One reward for Bernardoni's hard work came in 1974, 30 years after the accident, when he won the Illinois PGA Senior title.
