Van Wie was the U.S. Women's Amateur Champion in 1932, 1933, and 1934, the last three years of her competitive career, and considered the best female amateur players in the world. Considered a child prodigy while playing out of Beverly Country Club, she took up golf at age 12. Two years later she was playing at the top amateur level and won her first title at the age of 16, the Western Junior. She also won the Chicago Women's District Amateur title three times, the Florida state amateur title twice, the South Atlantic amateur twice and the Mid-South amateur. The Women's Western Amateur was the only title that eluded her. After her final victory in 1934, Van Wie withdrew from competitive golf, opening an ice cream parlor in Florida. Later, she was a market researcher for a Chicago food company. In the mid 1950s, Van Wie turned professional and taught the game in her studio on East 75th Street until retiring in 1975.
